Nurtured amongst the magical beauty of their small volcanic island, the Balinese intrinsically adaptedthemselves to the environmental conditions of their homeland, using the bountiful natural resources found in their tropical terrain while striving to be caretakers of the land. Inspired by the cultural environmental consciousness of the island’s native inhabitants, Bali’s contemporary artists, architects, and visionary entrepreneurs—facing the challenges of working with Bali’s ecosystem and the demands set by a growing influx of foreign tourists—have rediscovered this long tradition of sustainability and infused their architectural and interior designs to reflect these principles, without sacrificing glamour or quality of life.
An intimate portrait of style, luxury, and innovation, Bali: Sustainable Visions (cloth, $49.95, November 2015) distinguishes individuals who have married the beauty and elegance of their projects to the fundamentals of sustainability through Isabella Ginanneschi’s stunning, full-color photography and Duncan Murray Kirk’s retelling of these visionaries’ personal journeys and philosophies. Featuring interviews from Bali’s ecologically minded tribe—including Elora Hardy, Linda Garland, Emerald Star, Claude Graves, John Hardy, and a dozen others— Bali: Sustainable Visions introduces readers to the stories and insights surrounding sustainable methods and motivations. Whether it is incorporating elements of Bali’s architectural heritage, which is founded on sustainable material, or adapting to include the high-tech environmental solutions of today, these creators prove that the implementation of designs that are equally in tune with nature and luxury are achievable through an unfailing devotion to both of these elements.
Strikingly illustrated throughout with full-color photography, this gorgeous and eye-opening volume reveals the most innovative projects in Bali and other Indonesian islands, including luxurious private homes built from traditional and reclaimed materials; the Suarga Resort, which boasts the world’s largest bamboo-shingled roof; and the Green School, an international primary and secondary school where students learn to be stewards of the earth. A delightful read for anyone who possesses a passion for architecture, travel, and nature, Bali: Sustainable Visions is a fresh and stylish approach to environmentally conscious design.
