Dear Friends,
Oh
what a year it has been for us at Wayúu Tayá! We have kept very busy
improving the lives, welfare, access to education and sustainability of
indigenous families all over Latin America!
Just last month, we concluded our
6th annual health drive, which this year benefited over
68,000 indigenous people. The multidisciplinary drive lead by the Foundation reached 10 communities in 4 days.
More than 100 volunteers helped the team of 50 doctors, dentists, and
nurses deliver vaccinations, and perform preventative care check-ups,
and oral hygiene consults, among many other services. This has become
one of the most important and impactful programs Wayúu Tayá conducts on a
yearly basis, and we plan to expand its reach.
In
addition to our medical and healthcare initiatives, the Foundation
continues to provide formal pre-school and elementary studies to
vulnerable indigenous children. Counting the 3 schools we support,
we have over 3,000 children enrolled for the upcoming school year. At our pilot school, Tepichi Talashi, classes are taught in wayuunaiki and
Spanish, with the hopes of enabling the children to be successful
individuals, while emphasizing their cultures and beliefs.
Our
health drives and our education programs are just a few examples of the
amazing work we are able to do because of the generous donations we
receive year after year. The progress we have made in over a decade of
work has been invaluable, but we still have so much more to do.
