Balmain - Autumn/Winter 2014-15 Ready-To-Wear

IF Olivier Rousteing has his way, next season we’ll be marching to the beat of Balmain’s regimental drum - for today, at his autumn/winter 2014 show for the brand, it was a military-heavy affair.
Rousteing enlisted his own model army (Rosie, Joan, Jourdan, Karlie, Edie and Malaika - a formidable force to be reckoned with) to showcase his vision, which manifested itself in pocketed cargo trousers; gabardine jackets with drawstrings, box-pleat pockets and layered ribbed cuffs; regalia-resembling heavy gold detail; and of course that synonymous khaki hue.
But being Balmain, it wasn’t about practicality – this was a high-wattage outing that was focused on strength and sensuality. Sexy pleated skirts, tight little waists and  leopard-print chain belts were rigid, restrictive even, and kept the form defined in a corset-like way, while later weighty rope dresses and leather jackets had a tight and constricted structure.
It was the easy-going, looser pieces that satisfied our eye more so than the pieces that imposed restraint – the encasing rope designs which exposed bare skin beneath were more Rihanna than relaxed (the star herself turned up to support her friend Rousteing in a head-to-look from the collection, showing exactly what it takes to wear one of these designs). But it was a collection that was cohesive - the lavish detail of which enhanced by the sensational  ceremonial surroundings of the Hotel du Ville – and one that will have fans of the label standing to attention next season.
