“The darkness of light”

En el marco de la edición del festival internacional de
fotografía y artes visuales, PhotoEspaña 2013, la Galería Fernando Pradilla
presenta la primera exposición individual en nuestro país de la artista
venezolana Suwon Lee. Bajo el título “The darkness of light” se agrupan nueve
fotografías y una caja de luz de la reciente producción de esta joven artista,
nacida en Caracas en 1977.
Suwon Lee ha realizado
varios talleres y cursos de formación, entre otros el taller de fotografía
experimental en Caracas con el fotógrafo venezolano Nelson Garrido, pero su
formación es autodidacta.
Desde que en el 2004, Lee realizara su primera exposición
individual en Caracas, esta artista ha continuado presentando su trabajo en
bienales, encuentros y ferias internacionales en Venezuela, Brasil, Colombia y
Estados Unidos. Asimismo ha realizado exposiciones individuales en su país
natal, y formado parte de numerosas exposiciones colectivas en Panamá, Francia,
Perú, España, entre otros. En el 2006, Suwon Lee participa en el CAMPUS PHE,
donde realiza un taller con el fotógrafo alemán Axel Hütte, y desde entonces
realiza residencias anuales viajando a diferentes destinos en España, Perú,
Venezuela e Islandia.
El proyecto que Suwon Lee presenta en nuestra galería para
PhotoEspaña 2013 se centra en los astros y fenómenos lumínicos del universo
boreal. La artista muestra su interés por las relaciones que se establecen
entre el hombre y la naturaleza, por las respuestas emocionales que ésta
suscita, y por la constatación del individuo de la insignificancia y
transitoriedad de sus problemas frente a la eternidad del universo. Lee se
detiene en esta eternidad a través de la luz que emana de los astros y en el
encuentro que se produce entre la oscuridad y la luz, resaltando la aparente
contradicción que se crea entre la oscuridad en la luz y
la luminosidad en lo oscuro.
A partir de una larga exposición fotográfica, capaz de
captar imágenes y matices no perceptibles por el ojo humano, la artista
consigue crear atmósferas de carácter pictórico. Su propósito de pintar
con la luz, se manifiesta con especial nitidez en las diferentes obras de
esta exposición; unas veces captando las múltiples variaciones de la luz,
afectada por factores climáticos y geográficos, otras veces, recreando las gradaciones
cromáticas del cielo, o estableciendo un rejuego entre la presencia
advertida o sugerida de la figura humana ante ese universo de oscuridad o luz.
La obra fotográfica de Suwon Lee ha sido reconocida en
diversas ocasiones. En 2008 obtuvo el Premio International Young Visual Arts
Entrepreneur, otorgado por el British Council de Venezuela, y la Beca de de
trabajo en el programa de subvenciones de la Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation
(CIFO) de Miami (EEUU). El Directorio de Artistas del New Museum de New York,
incluyó en su Directorio de 2009, el trabajo de Lee con motivo de su
participación en la exposición colectiva “Younger than Jesus”. Recientemente,
fue galardonada con el Premio de la Asociación Internacional de Críticos de
Arte, de Artista Emergente en Venezuela, y en este año ha participado en
dos Residencias artísticas en Nes y Gullkistan, Skagastrond-Laugarvatn,
Islandia.
La exposición “The darkness of light” de Suwon Lee,
permanecerá abierta al público hasta el próximo 13 de julio de 2013.

As part of the international festival of photography and
visual arts, PhotoEspaña 2013, Fernando Pradilla Gallery presents the first
solo exhibition in Spain of the Venezuelan artist Suwon Lee. This young artist,
born in Caracas in 1977, will show ten photographs from her most recent
creation under the title "The darkness of light".
Suwon Lee has taken several workshops and training
courses, including the experimental photography workshop in Caracas with
Venezuelan photographer Nelson Garrido, but their training is self-taught.
Since making her first solo exhibition in Caracas in 2004,
Lee has continued to present her work in international biennials, encounters
and exhibitions in Venezuela, Brazil, Colombia and the United States. She has
also had solo exhibitions in her native country, and has taken part in numerous
group exhibitions in Panama, France, Peru, Spain, among others. In 2006, Suwon
Lee participates in the Campus PHE, where she took a workshop with German
photographer Axel Hütte, and has since made annual apprenticeships with him
traveling to different destinations in Spain, Peru, Venezuela and Iceland.
For PhotoEspaña 2013, Suwon Lee presents in our gallery a
project that focuses on the stars and light phenomena of the universe as seen
from the northern hemisphere. The artist shows her interest in establishing
relations between man and nature, the emotional responses that this raises, and
the realization of the individual’s insignificance and impermanence against the
eternity of the universe. Lee stops at this eternity through the light
emanating from the stars and in the encounter that occurs between darkness and
light, highlighting the apparent contradiction that is created between the darkness within light and light
within darkness.
From long exposure photography,
which captures images and shades not visible to the human eye, the artist
manages to create atmospheres of a pictorial nature. The purpose of painting with light is manifested with particular clarity
in the various works of this exhibition: sometimes capturing the multiple
variations light, affected by climatic and geographical factors, other times,
recreating the color shades of the sky, or establishing a warned interplay
between the presence or suggested human figure before that universe of darkness
or light.
The photographic work of Suwon Lee
has been recognized on several occasions. In 2008 she won the International
Young Visual Arts Entrepreneur, awarded by the British Council of Venezuela,
and a grant from the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFOs) Miami (USA)
Grant Program. She was included in 2009 in the Younger than Jesus: Artists
Directory published by the New Museum in New York and Phaidon Press London.
Recently, she was awarded the Emerging Artist prize by the International
Association of Art Critics, in Venezuela, and this year she has participated in
two artistic residences at Nes, Skagastrond and Gullkistan, Laugarvatn,
Iceland.
The exhibition "The darkness
of light" by Suwon Lee, will be open to the public until July 13, 2013.
