Saint Laurent Takes Over Colette with Vespas, Cameras, and Le Smoking Lighters

On December 20, the legendary Parisian concept store Colette will close forever. But before the mother-daughter team of cofounders, Colette Roussaux and Sarah Andelman, bid adieu to their Rue St.-Honoré space for good, they are hosting the last in a season-long series of pop-up takeovers. The lucky brand that will be the last to inhabit Colette’s first floor? Saint Laurent. For the occasion, Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello has dreamed up a series of collectible collaborative items and an exclusive collection of Saint Laurent pieces that celebrate the traditions and tenets of Parisian culture.
The pièce de résistance of the takeover is an all-black version of Paris’s most ubiquitous, unofficial vehicle, the Vespa. There’s also a glossy black and fully crystal-embellished motorcycle helmet made with Ruby, a customized vintage Polaroid SX-70 camera, a leopard-print Arkaic Concept skateboard, and a box of Pierre Marcolini custom chocolates. Should none of that ring your bell, Yves Saint Laurent Beauté palettes will be available alongside a range of exclusive Anthony Vaccarello–designed items, like Bryan Ferry and Patti Smith tees, heart-embossed bags and wallets, and three studded, logoed, and heart-shaped leather riding crops meant for the bedroom. (How else to really capture the glam eroticism of Saint Laurent’s Le Smoking hot after-dark ethos?)
What’s more, those who can remember all the way back to the fashion world of 2013 will recall that Saint Laurent and Colette haven’t always been friendly bedfellows. After Colette started selling ironic tees that referenced the Saint Laurent brand and its founder during Hedi Slimane’s tenure as creative director, the label pulled its merchandise indefinitely from the store. But with a new creative in charge comes a new spirit. Saint Laurent is even rumored to be taking over the Colette space for its own store in 2018. Consider the pop-in shop a test-run for what Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent shopping experience could look like.
