#GastroChic: The 10 best restaurants of 2013

Caillebotte

Pantruche, the charming bistro on Paris' Rue Victor Massé,  now has a younger brother, as the team have opened Caillebotte just a stone's throw away from the original. The family resemblance is striking, with a simple, seasonal menu of carefully-designed and well-proportioned dishes, accompanied by an enticing wine list. The food is served in a mirrored, marble and wood decor with an open kitchen. We can't get enough of this latest eaterie to open its doors in hip South Pigalle... don't forget to book in advance.
Caillebotte, 8 rue Hippolyte Lebas 75009 Paris - Tel.: 01 53 20 88 70.
Holybelly

A stone's throw from Paris' Place de la République and the Canal Saint-Martin, Rue Lucien-Sampaix has received a breath of fresh air recently, with the opening of a coffee shop (Tuck Shop), The Sunken Chip fish and chip shop and other spots with an Anglo-Saxon vibe, including Bob's Juice. The latest addition is Holybelly, and it already has people talking. In a clean atmosphere with an all-white decor, wood and vintage tiles, friendly waiters and waitresses serve fresh, seasonal dishes. It's this season's must-visit.

Holybelly, 19 rue Lucien-Sampaix 75010 Paris
Miznon

From the streets of Tel-Aviv to the heart of Paris' Marais, chef Eyal Shanibrings a café providing a healthy reinterpretation of the sandwich, using fresh pita bread and an assortment of fillings. The menu is based on the small round breads with a variety of toppings including lamb kebab, minute steak with or without eggs, ratatouille, and tuna tartar, and all dishes come accompanied by grilled cauliflower instead of French fries. The café, which is decorated in industrial style with raw concrete, wood and steel, is a certified spot for a healthy, hearty meal.
Miznon, 22 rue des Ecouffes 75003 Paris - Tel.: 01 44 78 01 89.

Le Perchoir

Since it's opening in July, this rooftop bar on the 7th floor of a modern building boasting panormanic views across the city, has caused something of a buzz around the Rue-Crespin-du-Gast off the Rue Oberkampf. Through word of mouth, a cool crowd have commandeered Le Perchoirfrom Wednesday and Saturday evening, taking to soft matresses to sip mojitos. It's this month's worst-kept secret.
Le Perchoir, 14 rue Crespin du Gast 75011.
The restaurant is open in the evening from Tuesday to Saturday, telephone reservations from 4pm each day.
Buvette Paris

A landmark on the Paris foodie map, the 9th arrondissement offers endless culinary delights. The newest addition to the area is Buvette Paris, a "gastrothèque" recently opened by American Judy Williams, fresh from its sister establishment in Greenwich Village. In a cool but soigné setting, you can sample carefully cooked delights all day long, from a breakfast of scones, cinnamon rolls, or steamed scrambled eggs served with salmon, through to a dinner menu of leek vinaigrette, grilled radicchio with scamorza, croque monsieur or madame, salads bursting with vegetables, or hachis parmentier. For your sweet tooth, there is light chocolate mousse, spongy waffles, or tarte tatin served with creme fraiche, and house lemonade or wash your meal down with a bottle from the well-stocked wine cellar.
Buvette Paris, 28 rue Henri-Monnier 75009 Paris
Gateaux Thoumieux

After a long wait and numerous set-backs, the much-anticipated grand opening of Jean-François Piège’s new patisserie, Gâteaux Thoumieux took place in November. Situated just a few steps from his other highly rated restaurants, Piège’s latest offering boasts a stunning marble and oak interior from interior designer and architect India Mahdavi and a menu filled with delights from head chef Ludovic Chaussard. Think seasonal fruit tarts, moist sponge cakes and Piège’s legendary bread rolls combining to create a new Paris go-to.
Gâteaux Thoumieux,  58 rue Saint-Dominique 75007 Paris.  Open Monday to Friday.
Lazare Restaurant

Created by interior designer Karine Lewkowicz and managed by Chef Eric Fréchon, with wood, copper and leather décor, this spot on the square in front of St Lazare has the city's foodies all abuzz. Channeling a brasserie meets loft feel, there's a central bar and a top guest table, non-stop service from early morning until midnight and traditional dishes given a new lease of life. Tasty treats include eggs mimosa with tuna or crab, fingerling potatoes in Guéméné chitterling vinaigrette, sole fillet from Dieppe, egg custard and fried Mirabelle plums with verbena and with a weekly set of daily specials, there are pike quenelles in Nantua sauce on Monday, chicken fricassee in white wine sauce on Wednesday, Toulouse sausages and mash on Thursday and a well-stocked wine cellar to boot. With a warm welcome, Lazare could well be a lesson in the art of eating.
Lazare, Parvis de la Gare Saint-Lazare, Rue intérieure 75008 Paris - Tel : 01 44 90 80 80.
Artisan

Paris foodies still aren't over the 9th, with new openings every weekend that cater to the finest palettes, with one eye on the trendy. From the team behind Maison Mère, L'Artisan is not to be missed. Good food doesn't have to mean over-production here, we loved the confit tomato, strawberry and parmesan bruschetta, melt-in-the-mouth Spanish ham, creamy plaited mozza, caramelized filet of mackerel and the roast goat's cheese-stuffed figs that are the flavor of Fall in a single mouthful. Master of the cocktail shaker Frédéric Le Bordays provides well-mixed drinks while you're deliberating the menu, whether belly up to the bar or at the wood tables in the pared-down interior, with just the right amount of cool.

Artisan, 14 rue Bochart de Saron 75009 Paris.
The Fish Club

Retro decor, big windows and graphic prints provide the backdrop for fish and seafood from a team headed by Pedro Miguel Schiaffino, the Peruvian chef who has mastered dishes from Malabar to Lima. Ceviches are made from the best seafood and grilled over hot coals or on metal planchas. Fine wine, well-shaken cocktails and outdoor seating make it one of the most stylish haunts in Paris.
The Fish Club, 58 Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau, 75001 - Tel: 01 40 26 68 75.
